Your Journey

“Just as a woman’s heart knows how and when to pump, her lungs to inhale, and her hand to pull back from fire, so she knows when and how to give birth.” Virginia DiOrio

ANTENATAL CARE

Your journey with us begins when you decide to use a midwife as your primary caregiver for your pregnancy and birth. You are welcome to make an appointment to come and meet us and ask us questions you need answers to! Remember that we will share a very sacred moment and therefore you must feel comfortable!

Our checkups begin anywhere from 16 weeks or once you have decided to choose us as your midwives. At these checkups we check baby’s heart rate, feel baby’s position if possible, measure that baby is growing adequately, check your urine and blood pressure, check your weight as well as answer any questions you may have. Initially appointments are every 4 weeks. From 28 weeks, they are every two weeks and then from 36 weeks we see you weekly!  You will be required to see our backup gynae twice if possible, but definitely at 36 weeks.

We highly recommend that you get a doula on your team as well! When you go into labour, your doula will come to you at home and help you in the early stages of labour. This can be a very long and tiring process and the doula will guide you with pain coping techniques, when to eat, when to sleep and when to do exercises to help move the labour along. The doula is in contact with us the whole time and once active labour begins then we will either come to you at home, or we will all meet at genesis.

Once we are with you, we will intermittently listen to baby’s heart rate and monitor the progress of labour with as little intervention as possible until baby arrives. When baby is born, placenta is delivered and stitching is done if necessary, we remain with you for 1-2 hours or until baby has had their first feed!

POSTNATAL CARE

Postnatal checkups are done at your home 2-3 times in the first week or two. And we are available at anytime if you need assistance or advise. At 6 weeks, you come to us for a final check up where we can also do a Pap smear.

Having spent all this time with you, and being involved in such a profound event in your life, our relationship often continues for much longer than 6 weeks!

It is our honour to be of support to you and your family in this special occasion.

“Birth is an opportunity to transcend. To rise above what we are accustomed to, reach deeper inside ourselves than we are familiar with, and to see not only what we are truly made of, but the strength we can access in and through birth.”

—Marcie Macari
